What we do
Research, dissemination and execution of activities are the main actions we carry out, with existing correlation and correspondence between them. The research carried out by the community gives rise to the postulation and execution of projects, necessary for carrying out activities to disseminate results.
Alliances are fundamental to our work, which is why a great effort is made to consolidate work teams, both inside the research team and outside the University, increasing and strengthening ties with key actors: city councils, public schools, NGOs, and other public and private entities.
In many aspects, university campuses resemble small urban systems. We take advantage of these similarities to validate our research, turning our University into a living laboratory or Living Lab. We rely on existing spaces inside the University to implement innovative projects, increase the visibility of research and enhance the replicability of the results on a city scale.
LINES OF INVESTIGATION
MAIN OBJECTIVES

Energy and climate change
We seek to contribute to the achievement of global commitments, such as Sustainable Development Goals, and local ones, such as the Decarbonisation of the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

Urban space transformation
We want to reinvent cities and transform them into resilient and sustainable spaces.

Fair and responsible habits
We promote habits that reduce the carbon footprint and support fair, ecological and proximity commerce.

Monitoring and measurement of impacts
All the research we carry out requires measuring its impacts in different areas such as urban comfort, environment and society.

Objective 1
Accelerate the transition of cities towards more resilient, fair and sustainable models.

Objective 2
Align research and innovation at the UPM to the new European framework.

Objective 3
Contribute to the achievement of global commitments like the Sustainable Development Goals and local commitments such as UPM 2030 Decarbonisation.

Objective 4
Increase the visibility of UPM research on critical and relevant topics for the international agenda.

Objective 5
Strengthen the creation of multi-actor alliances in which the University has the necessary spaces to provide necessary and scalable solutions for the transformation of cities.
WORK TEAMS
Currently, two work teams have been formed with specific topics to centralize and enhance efforts:

1. Positive energy districts & Energetic communities
We want to transform the energy system locally, betting on a transition towards a decentralised, decarbonised and democratic energy model.

2. Renaturation of cities
We believe that the transformation of our cities goes trough the renaturation of the spaces that make it up and we identify strategic nodes in them, which have the potential to become transformative environments and catalysts for change.
